The New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance

The New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance (NJSSA) is a group of swim professionals uniting to create a strong voice to promote water safety throughout the state of New Jersey. NJSSA is a 501-3 C non-profit organization. The main purpose of NJSSA is to unify all aquatic organizations into one cooperative, collaborative family. The NJSSA serves our state by advocating for viable, safe conduct and enjoyment of the critical life skill of swimming.

The NJSSA seeks a part-time Executive Director (ED) that will support the leadership of the Board of Directors, in building membership, sponsorships and initiatives to achieve our mission.

Some specific current NJSSA projects include an initiative to educate the 150,000 annual new parents in New Jersey on water safety to shrink the average of ten children, age twelve and younger, that drown in New Jersey each year. NJSSA has launched a state wide bathing suit drive to help those in need, so they can begin to learn to swim.  As we continue to grow memberships and sponsorships, collaborate with other groups with like-minded missions, we believe we can carry a message of joy and respect for New Jersey’s immense opportunities in and around water that encourages our population to be safer than ever before.

Requirements: The successful candidate for this position must have demonstrated:

  • 1.     A passion for water safety.
  • 2.     Experience in aquatics.
  • 3.     Strong communication skills, including, the ability to respond to member inquires through email and phone. The creation and distribution of regular newsletters, updating the website and developing a strong social media presence.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR

DESCRIPTION:

The County of Monmouth is seeking an experienced senior level leadership professional to serve as the County’s next Deputy Director of the Monmouth County Park System.  Under the direction of the Director of the Monmouth County Park System and the Board of Recreation Commissioners, the Deputy Director is primarily responsible for the administrative functions of the Park System consisting of 42 parks, golf courses and special facilities covering 18,112 acres.  Facilities include 143 miles of trails, six golf courses, an equestrian center, ocean and bay beaches, historic sites, marina, athletic fields, recreation, visitor, horticultural and environmental centers, campgrounds, sprayground, skatepark, showgrounds, and playgrounds.

Specific duties include but are not limited to: preparing a recommendation and justification for a $38 million annual operating budget; serving as the liaison to the Monmouth County Finance Director; securing operating and capital funds; developing and administering procedures and processes to ensure the accurate and accountable collection of $24 million in annual revenue; coordinating with the Parks Purchasing Agent to assist in the review of bid specifications, requests for proposals, bid awards and contract administration ensuring compliance and consistency with County purchasing practices and State of New Jersey public procurement laws, in coordination with the Parks’ Planner; develop and administer a capital improvement plan that includes the upgrading and construction of park facilities; developing and administering procedures and processes for the timely and accurate payment of bills; acting as the primary customer service advocate; overseeing the inspection, maintenance and repair of park infrastructure including but not limited to buildings, roads, parking lots, recreational and visitor facilities, potable water supply wells, and public utility connections; serving as the liaison to the County’s Department of Information Technology Services; assuring that staff are equipped with resources to efficiently operate their areas of responsibility; identify and secure in-house and third-party digital applications that improve the visitor experience and make it easier for them to do business with the parks; outreach coordinator for cooperative projects with County municipalities and community non-profit organizations; serve as the Parks records custodian and provide documents to County Counsel in response to OPRA requests; serve as the liaison to the County’s Office of Professional Standards on all matters of corrective action and discipline for staff; assist in the administration, implementation and compliance with County personnel policies; prepare and present reports to boards and other bodies on the operation of the Parks System; review reports, attend meetings, and provide guidance related to employee safety, risk management, visitor safety and security; serve as the liaison to the County Counsel’s Office regarding all legal matters pertaining to the Park System; attend public meetings and special events on evenings and weekends.

General Statement of Work:

Under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Education, the Park Naturalist plays a significant role in connecting the public with the natural resources and beauty of our parks by developing curriculum and leading engaging and relevant programs. We place high priority on providing service to all Mercer County residents, including those who face systemic barriers to participation. As a year-round educator, the Park Naturalist will also lead school field trips, scout badge programs, public programs and afterschool programs as needed. Other duties include staffing information tables at fairs/festivals, developing and maintaining hands-on activities at the nature center, and supervising interns and volunteers.

The Township is seeking a part-time office clerk in the Recreation Department to help plan, support, and promote the township Recreation Department, which includes oversight of the municipal Swim Club.

Skills desired:

County Park Superintendent - County of Bergen - Department of Parks & Recreation 

Under direction, administers a comprehensive maintenance and development program for a geographical division of a large park system or a small or medium sized park system including parks and/or reservations, directs employees engaged in carrying out maintenance programs, prepares budget requests and administers an approved budget, develops, and submits plans for park rehabilitation and improvement as directed; does related work as required.

Knowledge and Job Responsibilities: (may include but not limited to) • Knowledge of the equipment and methods used in caring for park facilities. • Knowledge of the operation of varied types of park machinery. • Knowledge of the public uses to which parks and property are put. • Knowledge of sound budgetary practices and knowledge of effective park planning techniques. • Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to employees. • Ability to provide technical advice and direction when difficult and unusual problems arise. • Ability to see that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained and that desired objectives are achieved. • Ability to work harmoniously with associates, citizens, and others using the park facilities.

  • Directs and supervises the operation and management of all active and passive parkland (exclusive of golf course and the Bergen County Zoo).
  • Serves as Department safety officer.
  • Responsible to determine need and recruit full time, part time and seasonal staff in support of such.
  • Responsible for management of the division budget, developing, maintaining, and enforcing policies, procedures, and rules for the use and operation of parkland under their charge, scheduling, training, and managing asset allocation as well as maintaining any other plans, records, and documents relevant to the operation of the division.

Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday – 40hrs/wk (weekends and over time as needed)

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (horticulture, forestry, civil engineering, landscape architecture, park planning, park management, forest recreation management, conservation, natural resource management, earth sciences or environmental sciences)
  • Ten (10) years of management experience in managing the operational needs of a large urban park or park system including, but not limited to, planning the care and maintenance of large tracts of land, maintenance of public recreation facilities, preparation and administration of budgets and effective management of staff, and a thorough knowledge of the means, methods, and technology by which to accomplish such.
  • Membership in an organization that is relevant to horticulture/ landscaping, or any facet of parks operations is preferred. Examples: National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA), Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)

Skills and Special Requirements:

  • New Jersey residency.
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License, CDL candidates (preferred).
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (preferred).
  • Certified Pool Operator (preferred).
  • NJ Certified Pesticide Applicator Category 2, 3A, 3B, 5 (preferred).
  • Experience with Integrated Pest Management.
  • NJ Certified Compost Site Operator (optional).
  • Effective verbal, writing, multi-tasking and delegating skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational (planning & time management) and problem-solving skills in a timely fashion.
