RECREATION ASSISTANT

Term of Employment: Interim March 15, 2025 – September 15, 2025

Salary: Based upon experience

General Purpose: Assists in the planning, promotion, organization and administration of a comprehensive recreation program for the community.  This position assists the Program Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor in the overall planning functions and assumes the more routine duties of the Supervisor in his/her absence. Supervision is exercised over a number of seasonal and part-time employees as well as recreation volunteers.

Work is reviewed through periodic reports and by the observation of results obtained.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Program Coordinator

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops registration forms and related administrative materials and computer documentation. Organizes and attends league meetings.
  • Develops & evaluates new and proposed recreational programs and recommends implementation to the Supervisor.
  • Responsible for the operation, scheduling, and of recreation facilities in the town.
  • Designs, prepares, and releases news items and flyers informing the public on activities.
  • Maintains records, time sheets, expense and collection records and other office and administrative information as required by the Supervisor for the effective administration of recreation programs and facilities.
  • Is responsible for proper storage, maintenance and inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists the Coordinator in conducting public relations activities; answers inquires by telephone, mail and/or personal interviews on recreation programs. Is responsible for updating information on the recreation web site.
  • Coordinates gym & facility use with the Board of Education/school staff.
  • Assists in budget preparation and purchasing procedures.
  • Cooperates with other departments and civic groups in community activities. 
  • Assumes the duties of the Program Supervisor if that position is vacant.
  • Assumes the routine duties of the Supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

Graduate of a college or university with a degree in recreation or related field as well as experience in programming and facility operation; or a minimum of three years of experience in recreation programming and facility operation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This is a seasonal supervisory position within the Township of Morris Parks and Recreation Department. The Assistant Pool Manager has overall responsibility to assist the Pool Manager and be lead manager when the Pool Manager is not on duty with the safety of the pool, as well as managerial/ administrative, facility, aquatic, communication, and leadership duties, including:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Instill attention to safety among lifeguards, as well as pool members and guests
  • Must have good verbal communication skills, show initiative and enthusiasm. Must be able to motivate employees
  • Assist with recruitment and training of lifeguard staff
  • Assist staff training in operations and safety procedures; implements procedures and standards
  • Assist in scheduling all swim pool employees and properly recording hours
  • Administer First Aid, CPR, and other emergency and safety procedures, as required
  • Performs routine pool area maintenance as required; and ensures the cleanliness of facility, such as the pool, restroom, shower area, first aid room, and office space
  • Require all patrons to follow personal health and safety regulations as formulated by the NJ Department of Health and the Township of Morris Health Department
  • Conducts pre-season and in-season training for all swim pool personnel
  • Knowledge of the aquatic programs, procedures, policies, and general information
  • Listens and responds to patrons’ needs for assistance or information and provides the public with general information, in person and over the phone
  • Respond to patron and staff complaints and problems
  • Able to communicate with guests and staff in a professional manner
  • Investigates complaints and accidents and immediately informs the Pool Manager, Aquatics Coordinator and Director of Parks and Recreation
  • Tests the temperature, chlorine, and PH values of the pools on an hourly basis
  • Complete and/ or approved required safety checklists, logs and reports
  • Collects, counts, and records pool receipts from daily swim pool passes and swim lessons in receipt books at the end of each day

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree recommended
  • Must possess a valid government issued ID and Social Security Card
  • Required to submit to a background check
  • Minimum of three (3) seasons of lifeguarding or three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/ AED or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent; desired
  • CPO Certification; preferred

EXPECTED WORK HOURS

  • Required pre-season hours for management meetings, staff training, and pool operations
  • Typically, 40 hours per week in- season; 90-95 operating days
  • Part-Time work arrangements may be available

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, sit, and balance
  • Ability to regularly use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms
  • Routinely must lift, move and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds

SUPERINTENDENT OF RECREATION

The Borough of Hopatcong seeks a full-time Recreation Director who has at least 5+ years of supervisory experience in Recreation work involving the planning, promotion, development, and supervision of Recreation programs and events.

The Recreation Director must attend the monthly meetings of the Recreation Commission and be able to work evenings and weekends as needed for the coordination of events. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with the public courteously and professionally are required.

The Recreation Director position reports to the Borough Administrator.

Experience

  • ·       Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field preferred.
  • ·       At least five (5) years of experience in recreation work involving a recreation program's planning, promotion, development, and supervision.
  • ·       Applicants possessing a valid certificate as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (NRPA) preferred or ability to become certified within 12 months of employment.
  • ·       Experience with Edmunds MCSJ is a plus.
  • ·       Employee will be required to pass a background check and have a valid NJ Driver’s license.

Hours: Mon-Fri: 9-4:30, nights and weekends as needed for events, meetings, and activities.

COUNTY PARK RANGER

This position is responsible for opening and closing parks and facilities, cleaning restrooms, trash management, and general maintenance while interacting with the public.

Under supervision, conducts daily routine custodial and security duties, and foot patrols along trails.  Inspects parks and related facilities; resolves and reports maintenance and other issues as needed.  

Engages with the public and permit holders, providing information pertaining to park use, events, points of interest, nature, safety.  Enforces laws, regulations and policies; responds to a variety of incidents and emergencies.  Participates in programs where applicable.   

Work hours:  Burlington County Parks are open from dawn to dusk, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.  Hiring for PM shift, which adjusts based on sunset.  40 hours per week; 3-week rotating schedule.  This is an essential position, which includes weekends and holidays.

REQUIREMENTS:

Appointees will be required to pass medical and psychological testing, a background investigation and successfully complete a training program mandated by the New Jersey Police Training Commission within 18 months of appointment.

LICENSE: Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school, vocational high school, or possession of an approved high school equivalency certificate.

The Morris County Park Commission is seeking a Manager of Park Maintenance to manage the maintenance activities and operations for the Park Commission’s general-purpose parks and their amenities. The Manager oversees 30 employees and is responsible for planning, budgeting and enforcing work standards providing leadership and technical direction. The Manager acts as a Park Commission representative for contracted services and public interactions.
