Call for Papers
In 2020, the Essex County Park System, the nation's first county-wide park system, celebrates its 125th anniversary. In conjunction with the anniversary, the Essex County Parks Department will host the annual meeting of the National Association of Olmsted Parks in Newark, NJ from April 23-25, 2020. The program will include a papers session.
We are seeking papers from graduates and post-graduates in fields such as landscape architecture, urban or regional planning, urban policy, geography, community development or history with a specific interest in parks and open space. The research need not focus on the Essex County Park System, but the paper must be relevant to this park system in some form and include discussion of at least one or several parks designed by the Olmsted firm. Extra consideration will be given to papers that reflect the larger meeting theme of “The Olmsted Legacy Honoring the Past, Treasuring the Present, Shaping the Future: Park Preservation, Maintenance and Stewardship in the 21st Century“. Please send an abstract by Dec. 9, 2019 to Kathy Kauhl at email@example.com.
The Essex County Parks Archives traces the history of the nation’s oldest county park system, revealing the rich Olmsted Brothers legacy. Its collection documents the process of creating and designing parks, as well as the evolution of the Essex County Park System through generations of change. The Parks Archivist and assistants are available to aid with inquiries related to the parks, past and present. The Parks Archives is located in the Parks Administration Building at 115 Clifton Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Research services are available by appointment, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. For more information or to arrange an appointment please call 973-735-6230 or 6231.
